Exhibition Report

Basildon
5th / 6th July 2008

Our first visit to the Basildon MRC Exhibition in Laindon, Essex and setup was Friday evening with the help of Doug and Matt whilst Cab-It looked after Cameron. Our arrival early on the Friday evening meant that power wasn't yet available but tables and chairs were already in position.

Early start on the Saturday morning with final setup and checking everything out. RSDL had approved the demonstration of their Island Line product late Friday evening and that had been downloaded overnight. Matt installed it on one of the laptops and it was given a good airing over the weekend.

A number of UKTS members visited the stand over the weekend and were impressed by the Island Line and the 483 unit. There was a steady flow of visitors to the show who stopped by for a chat. The DCC Workshop was in attendance and within an hour of arrival Saturday morning had resolved two DCC issues for visiting layouts. One with a duff decoder that wouldn't respond to Function keys, a second one that decided it wouldn't work on its owners layout, but would work on our demo stand. When he took back to his layout it worked fine for the rest of the weekend. Underground Ernie was also in attendance, very publicly at the "Plus Daughters" stand with all their Underground Ernie product range.

Overall a very good exhibition. Quality layouts, a good selection of traders and plenty to see and buy for everyone. One piece of information that we received and will not sit well with DCC users of ZTC equipment is that ZTC have stopped direct user support. Any ZTC user will now only receive support from the retailers. This is likely to mean delays in getting a response from ZTC if the retailer doesn't have an immediate answer to a query.

Our thanks to the Basildon Model Railway Club for the invitation, refreshments and location. Our thanks to all those that gave of their time to help us demonstrating, to those who dropped by for a chat and to the members of the public who visited the exhibition over the weekend.
