We were invited to the Rother Valley Railway Supporters Association (RVRSA) Exhibition
back in September 2002 whilst demonstrating at the Ipswich Exhibition. The exhibition
venue is the Village Hall in Robertsbridge and although small in size it contained more
than enough variety in modelling to suit most tastes.
We were brilliantly placed on the stage at the far end of the hall so that as you entered
the hall you saw us and the UKTrainSim Demonstration screens.
With only Leviathan1949, Cab_it and Deltic9000 at the exhibition, it got a little thin on
the gound at lunchbreaks with one machine running 'Introductory Train Ride' or an activity
that didn't demand too much attention. Nevertheless it was an excellent exhibition for UKTrainSim.
As with a number of exhibitions we have attended we attracted a fair cross section of the
modelling fraternity to look at what Microsoft Train Simulator was about and what UKTrainSim
could offer to enhance the original product. One young lady on seeing the display screens
from the door rushed up on stage to enquire "What is it? Can I buy it?". Having explained
the basic details and finer points she enthused that this was 'A MUST HAVE program' for her
computer and she would be buying it on the Monday.
Another hazard of our demonstration stand, not for UKTrainSim I would add, but the owner/operators
of other layouts in the exhibition. You may recall that at the Ipswich Exhibition, 2 of the Kings Oak
layout operators worked our PC's for most of the Sunday morning, whilst Leviathan1949 operated the
Kings Oak layout. WELL, it happened again, the same 2 operators, albeit at separate times were
both to be seen operating the UKTrainSim stand. In addition, another operator from the O Guage
layout joined us for several hours on both Saturday and Sunday, much to the dismay of his own
layout operators.
As always we attracted a number of youngsters who just had to have a go. George and his dad; Timothy,
the young operator from the Holkham layout; and the not so young Lawrence, the operator from the
O Guage layout; finally two other youngsters who sat and drove the Intercity liveried 37 along the
MidEast Route for almost an hour and a half. Surprisingly, none of these wanted to see how fast it
would go or how spectacular a crash they could create. The young lad in the last picture was all
for stopping at every station along the route to see how accurate he could get. Usually half a loco
overshoot or undershoot. Not bad for for his first attempt and he was using the RailDriver console.
I've kept this picture until last as it is representative of the camaraderie you achieve on the
exhibition circuit between clubs; groups; societies and individuals. A nice surprise for Reg who
celebrated his 81st birthday on the Sunday presented with a small cake and a huge candle.
Reg had a small preservation stand in the corner of the hall for the Hastings Tramway and
Trolleybus Society and has done for the last five years. Let's hope he gets to attend many
more of them.
We would like thank Helen Brett for the invite to the RVRSA Exhibition and we look forward to meeting
up with the crowd at future exhibitions around the country. Thanks also to Deltic9000 for giving up his time
to help out as ever, despite the nightmare on the Saturday of a bus ride from Tunbridge Well to Robertsbridge.
